Hiram E. Leonard Diary, June 29 - July 5, 1870

29th Wednesday  A fine hot dry day with a light shower near night the ground verry dry  I did my choars was round the store all day closed up at 8 ½ & went to bed at 9 ½ sick.

30th Thursday  A fine hot dry day with a fine shower in afternoon & evening, I did my choars was at the office all day closed up at 8 ½ & went to bed about 10 nearly sick there was a festival at the Methodist Church this evening for Elder McGregor they got about 30 dols.

July 1st Friday  A cloudy damp fine growing morning & day broak away some towards night I did my choars was round the office all day closed up at 8 ¼ & went to bed 9 ½ nearly sick  George Strubler commenced carrying the mail to Winfield.

2nd Saturday  A fine pleasant comfitable day  I did my choars was round the office the most of the, went up to election to Garys Mills with Jerry Pollard about 4 oclock and back before 6, voted on the New Constitution & for Supreme Judge closed up about 9 ½ & went to bed about 10 nearly sick & worne out.

3rd Sunday  A fine pleasant pretty hot day  I did my choars was round home the most of the day went to Warners & up to my own corn near night came back & went to bed about 9 about sick & worne out with the heat [in margin] went to Warners got some lemons for the 4th.

4th Monday  rather a fine warme day & pleasant  I did my choars was round home till 12 ½ then went up to George Barruses to my place to dinner got back about 2, had a verry good time, Mrs Stone was there George Barrus went to Naperville & carried D Kenyon, G Resseguie Sim Billings & George Pennock they stayed till night & got pretty tight & George went after them again & got home about sunset.

5th Tuesday  fine hot dry weather  I did my choars was round store all day closed up at 8 ½ & went to bed at 9 ½ nearly sick & worne out with the heat & being about sick.”
