Hiram E. Leonard Diary, August 8 - 14, 1872

8th Thursday  A fine pleasant hot day & verry dry  I did my choars choared round some closed up at 8 and went to bed about 10 tiard & nearly sick with a cold  Chandler boys thrashed for H Rogers at my place today  I had for my 1/3, 64 bushels of oats delivered at Kenyons.

9th Friday  rather a cloudy hot day with a shower in the evening   I did my choars choared round some closed up at about 8 & went to bed about 10 nearly sick with a cold.

10th Saturday  A cloudy morning but rather a fine day & more cool  I did my choars choared round some closed up a little after 8 & went to bed a little before 10 nearly sick with a cold etc  Clark French & J Lehman went to Naperville in Josephs carriage & came back in afternoon pretty well set up with liquor & beer  Emma Barrus came up in the stage from Naperville & were riding with Clark French & Jo Lehman carried Mary Tart  they got home 11 or 12 oclock or later & stayed at Tarts over night  Young Herick was here.

11th Sunday  A cloudy day & not verry warm  I did my choars choared round all day some & and went to bed about 9 ½ nearly sick  I slipped down the cellar stairs before breckfust & hurt my ribs and side pretty bad  Young Townsand come over with John Stricklands carriage after Emma Barrus to go at stay there a week.  She was up to Graves with Mary Tart but went back to Naperville  Capt. Sam C Smith’s remains were brought from Chicago today by Naperville & buried in the ground by Graves, 10 or 11 carriage 7 waggon met the funeral at Naperville & brought them up, John Billings called here on his way to Wheaton.

12th Monday  fine weather for the season  I did my choars choared round some closed up at 8 & went to bed at about 10 tiard & nearly sick with a cold & _________.

13th Tuesday  rather fine weather but hot & dry  I did my choars choared round some closed up at 8 & went to bed at 10 tiard & nearly sick with a cold & being lame  Judge Williams decided the County cete question of DuPage County today in favor of Naperville a majority of 123 votes and throwed out the town of Winfield.

14th Wednesday  fine weather but hot & dry  I did my choars choared round some closed up at 8 & went to bed at about 10 tiard & nearly sick with a cold & a lame side  Mr Cole was married to Susa Smith this week.”
