CA&E Warrenville Station, 2018 Historic Landmark Ornament

CA&E Warrenville Station, 2018 Historic Landmark Ornament

$12.00

The Chicago, Aurora & Elgin (CA&E) Railroad came through Warrenville starting in 1902, bringing visitors and the ease of rail travel to Warrenville residents. High school students utilized the train to get to school, with the train line making four stops -Williams Road, the downtown depot, Winfield Road, and Wiesbrock Road. As travel by car increased after World War II, the CA&E passenger service declined. On July 3, 1957, at noon, the train stopped running.

In 1962 the rails were removed making way for the Illinois Prairie Path. After service ended, the CA&E depot was used by Robert and Dorothy Kelly, first as Dot’s Bargain Shop and then as the Dunk-It Coffee Shop. After the City government was established in 1967, the old train station was converted into the Warrenville City Hall until a new City Hall was constructed across the street and the old building was demolished.

This ornament was produced thanks to a generous donation from the late Robert “Bob” Sleep.
