Hiram E. Leonard Diary, October 31 - November 6, 1872

“31st Thursday  rather fine weather but cool & some cloudy  I did my choars choared round some, closed up about 8 & went to bed at 9 tiard & sick with a cold  Caroline went to Batavia to carry her carpet yarn to be wove, Perry carried her & Mrs Stafford to Batavia & then went up to Saint Charles to Mrs Howards the Spiritual woman that tells everything that is going on  She told them a great many things besides some that she did not tell they got home between sundown & dark.

“November 1st Friday  pretty fine weather for the season but a cool air I did my choars choared round some closed up at about 8 & went to bed about 9 nearly sick with a cold  Mrs Tart worked here all day a sewing, Rogers drew his corn stalks & left 6 or 8 bunches for me & I got them down to the howel.

“2nd Saturday  A cloudy damp disagreeable day and mist in the morning but was more pleasant at night  I did my choars, choared round some closed up at 8 & went to bed about 9 nearly sick with a cold  Mrs Tart sewed here all day  D Kriner had an auction today, cows sold from 37 to 40 dollars.

“3rd Sunday  A fine pleasant morning but clouded up about noon was a cloudy afternoon & looked like a storm  I did my choars was up to the farm some and went to bed about 9 nearly sick with a cold.

“4th Monday  rather fine weather but rained some during tonight  I did my choars & choared round some cloased up at 8 & went to bed 9.

“5th Tuesday  A cool cloudy muddy day  I did my choars choared round some closed up at 8 & went to bed about 9 ½ nearly sick  Election day  I went to Election with Mr Pelham to Junction started about 1 & got back about 4  Grant was elected President, Gloss circuit clerk John Kline sheriff.

“6th Wednesday  A cool cloudy day  I did my choars choared round some closed up at 8 & went to bed at 9 ½ nearly sick with a  cold.”
