The Warrenville Grove was once the location of the Warrenville mills. The community was created in 1833, and two years later the West Branch DuPage River was dammed at the Grove to power the saw mill (1835-1857) and grist mill (1847-1897). Due to frequent floods the dam was rebuilt many times. In 1897 the grist mill burned down. The DuPage Forest Preserve District first acquired 42-acres of the Grove in 1923, making it one of the first preserve properties in DuPage County. In the 1930s the Civilian Conservation Corps built a new dam, this time a scenic recreational dam. In 2011 the District removed the dam to allow for the natural environment to be restored, but left the limestone retaining walls of the millrace. The preserve is now 127-acres of trails, woodlands, picnic areas and shoreline with this iconic footbridge.
