The circular, castle-like structure that stands near City Hall off of Stafford Place is known by many as the roundhouse. It was built by William Manning around 1908 to resemble the historic Chicago water tower and  originally housed water pipes that expanded water service to the growing community. Over the history of the building it has housed “the Tribune Tower,” a tobacco and newspaper shop, a confectionery and a bakery. Many neighborhood children also fondly remember playing in the vacant building over the years.
